Where did the von Trapp family escape to

Where did the von Trapp family escape to: The von Trapps depart Salzburg, Austria, at night and travel across the surrounding mountains to safety in Switzerland in the last scene of “The Sound of Music.” If the von Trapps had scaled the Alps in real life, they would have passed into Nazi Germany rather than neutral Switzerland, which was around 200 miles away.

“Do they not understand geography in Hollywood?” After witnessing the movie, Maria von Trapp exclaimed, “Salzburg does not border Switzerland!” According to author Tom Santopietro’s latest book, “The Sound of Music Story,” the film’s director, Robert Wise, replied, “In Hollywood, you construct your own geography.”

Rupert, who was born in 1911 and was a practicing physician by the time the family fled Austria in 1938, was the eldest von Trapp kid, not 16-going-on-17-year-old Liesl. Liesl was no longer Liesl. All of the von Trapp children’s names were modified for the film.

The von Trapps emigrated to America after fleeing the Nazi dictatorship in Austria. The National Archives and Records Administration has records of their arrival into the United States and subsequent petitions for citizenship. Where did the von Trapp family escape to
