Smith died on March 19, 2022, at the age of 78, after been born on January 27, 1944. There was no mention of a cause of death.

Smith was born in Hazard, Kentucky, and attended Kentucky Wesleyan College, where he won the NCAA Division II title in 1966.
Smith converted a basket in the final 15 seconds of the game to break a 51-51 tie and give Kentucky Wesleyan the win over Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Smith was picked in the third round by the Cincinnati Royals after college, but he never played in the NBA.
Smith was a member of the Minnesota Muskies, Kentucky Colonels, and Utah Stars in the ABA from 1967 to 1971.
