Mark Shields Illness: Mark Stephen Shields was an American political columnist and pundit. Several Democratic politicians used him as a prominent character in their electoral campaigns.

Shields gave weekly political analysis and commentary to the PBS NewsHour from 1988 through 2020. Shields was a moderator and panelist on CNN’s Capital Gang for 17 years.

Over the course of his career, he covered 12 presidential campaigns and 24 national party conventions. Shields began working as an editorial writer at The Washington Post in 1979. He began writing a column for Creators Syndicate in the same year, which is now distributed nationally.

On the Campaign Trail, a book on the 1984 presidential campaign, was written by Shields. He was a fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government’s Institute of Politics.

Mark taught US politics and the press at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
