In 1954, Sir Fowler started his career at Ove Arup and Partner’s London office. In 1955, he was admitted as an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

In 1957, he moved back to New Zealand and started working as a self-employed architect in Wellington. From 1959 to 1989, he was a partner with Calder, Fowler, Styles, and Turner.

The Wellington Overseas Passenger Terminal, designed by Fowler in the early 1960s to handle international passenger ships, was never used for the purpose for which it was intended because of the growing appeal of air travel.

He claimed that he “was party to the design of the biggest white elephant that Wellington ever erected” in an interview conducted many years afterwards.

In 1970, the New Zealand Institute of Architects elected Fowler as a Fellow. Is Sir Michael Fowler Still Alive

In a closely contested election against longtime incumbent Sir Frank Kitts, Fowler won the position of mayor of Wellington in 1974, which he held until his retirement in 1983.

With the slogans “Get in behind” and “Carmen for Mayor,” and a platform supporting homosexual marriage and legalized brothels, Carmen Rupe, a transsexual performer in the area, ran against Fowler in the 1977 election (although neither of these are local-government matters in New Zealand).

Fowler was rumored to be a contender for the National Party nomination in the Wellington Central constituency in the run-up to the general election of 1984.

He acknowledged that the party’s electorate chairman had asked him to run but that he had declined. Is Sir Michael Fowler Still Alive
