Ernest Angell son was Roger Angell. From 1950 to 1969, he was the President of the American Civil Liberties Union, which he founded.

Ernest graduated from Harvard College in 1911 and Harvard Law School in 1913, when he was elected Phi Beta Kappa. In 1954, he obtained his LLD from Bard College.

Angell served as an infantry Captain in the American Expeditionary Force, a branch of the US Army, in Europe during World War I.

From 1950 to 1969. Angell took over as president of the American Civil Liberties Union from Dr. John Haynes Holmes. He was followed by Edward Ennis, who had been the ACLU’s general counsel since 1955, after he retired in 1969.
