David Birney Obituary: David Birney, a classically trained theater actor who achieved success on the stage, including on Broadway, but is most remembered for his performance in “Bridget Loves Bernie,” a short-lived sitcom about an interfaith marriage in which he co-starred with his future wife, Meredith Baxter.

Birney was the first child of Jeanne (née McGee) and Edwin B. Birney, an FBI special agent, and was born in Washington, D.C. He went to school in Brooklyn, Ohio, and graduated from Cleveland’s West High School.
Birney was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, according to the December 2017 edition of the Wide Wide World newsletter for Dartmouth College class of 1961 graduates. He died on April 29, 2022, at the age of 83, at his home in Santa Monica, California.
David Birney died of Alzheimer’s disease, according to Michele Roberge, who claimed to be his life partner.
David wasn’t only a screenwriter. He also appeared in a number of theater performances, including the lead role in Ron Cowen’s play Summertree, in which he played a soldier slain in Vietnam.
