Birney got an M.A. in Theatre Arts from UCLA, where he studied acting and directing with Ralph Freud and William Melnitz.
Birney was a teaching assistant at Southern Utah University and received an honorary Ph.D. in Humanities.
Birney has also recorded audiobooks by Dean Koontz, Paul Theroux, Annie Dillard, Thomas Kenneally, and Orson Scott Card, among others.
