Vachss worked as a federal investigator in sexually transmitted diseases before becoming a Juvenile Lawyer. In addition, he worked as a social-services caseworker in New York City.

Alice Vachss, Vachss’ wife, was a sex crimes prosecutor who later climbed to the position of Chief of the Special Victims Bureau in Queens, New York. She is the author of the New York Times Notable Book of the Year, Sex Crimes: Ten Years on the Front Lines Prosecuting Rapists and Confronting Their Collaborators.

She has continued to prosecute sexual offenses as a Special Prosecutor in rural Oregon.

In terms of awards, Vachss has received the First Annual Harvey R. Houck Award (Justice for Children), the Childhelp Congressional Award, the Raymond Chandler Award, the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière, and many more.

Andrew Vachss is the author of 33 novels and three collections of short stories, as well as poetry, plays, song lyrics, and graphic novels. As a novelist, he is perhaps best known for his Burke series of hardboiled mysteries; Another Life constituted the finale to the series.
