One of his biological parents was of Afro-Caribbean descent, while the other was of Danish or Swedish descent. Ken and Barbara adopted Symonds and moved to Australia immediately after they did so.

Andrew spent his early years in Charters Towers, Queensland, where his father Ken worked as a teacher at a private school which Andrew also attended. He was interested in athletics during his school days.
